The world's largest car carrier sails for the first time from Suzhou Port, China
2025-04-29
On April 27, BYD Shenzhen, the world's largest automobile carrier, set sail for Brazil on its maiden voyage from Taicang Port of Suzhou Port, China, carrying more than 7,000 new energy commercial vehicles. This is the largest batch of Chinese automobile exports in a single trip, marking a new step in China's ability to export automobiles to the ocean.
According to reports, the "Shenzhen" is the fourth professional new energy vehicle carrier of BYD in China. It was just delivered on April 22 and uses LNG dual-fuel clean power technology, which meets the latest environmental protection standards of the International Maritime Organization. The ship is 219.9 meters long and 37.7 meters wide. It has 9,200 standard loading spaces and 16 decks. The loading spaces are equivalent to the area of 20 standard football fields. In addition, through the advanced lifting platform system, it can achieve efficient mixed loading of different models, which can be called the "sea car palace".
Under the current complex international geopolitical situation and the profound reconstruction of the global industrial chain, the one-time, large-scale export of "Shenzhen" overseas not only set a record for the largest single export volume of Chinese automobiles, but also demonstrated the resilience of the Chinese economy and the innovative power of "Made in China".
Suzhou Port is located in Jiangsu Province, China. At the end of last year, it became China's first inland port with an annual throughput of more than 10 million TEUs. It has a different "relationship" with the Port of Chancay in Peru. During the construction of Chancay Port, the Taicang Port Area of Suzhou Port shipped more than 160 units (sets) of port-related equipment in two batches, which were directly sent to Chancay Port via customized routes. These equipment include container trucks, flatbed transporters, reach stackers, forklifts, excavators, etc., laying a solid foundation for the opening of Chancay Port as scheduled. At that time, the first cargo ship that arrived at Chancay Port came from the Taicang Port Area of Suzhou Port.
In order to expand the overseas channels for Chinese enterprises, Suzhou Port has continuously developed stable, efficient and convenient ocean routes with the countries along the Belt and Road and the Global South. In January this year, the general cargo direct express ship from Suzhou Port Zhangjiagang Port to Peru's Chancay Port was officially opened, becoming a "sea highway" for general cargo transportation connecting China and South America and promoting interconnection between the two places. In March, Suzhou Port and Chancay Port signed a friendly port agreement at the Chinese Embassy in Peru, jointly guiding shipping companies to layout operating routes between the two ports, building a low-cost, high-efficiency, green and low-carbon maritime logistics route between the two ports, and further promoting the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative to take root and blossom in Peru. In April, the first ocean-going direct ROLL-ROLL route to Africa in the Yangtze River Basin of China was opened at Suzhou Port, mainly stopping at the two major hub ports of Lagos, Nigeria and Durban, South Africa.
The opening of ocean routes has injected new impetus into the economic and trade cooperation between China and friendly countries, and has had a positive impact on the regional economy. In the first quarter of this year, Suzhou Port Taicang Port Area exported a total of 147,600 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 18.35%. Among them, 58,500 vehicles were exported to countries participating in the construction of the "Belt and Road Initiative", a year-on-year increase of 3.06%. On March 3, Suzhou Port and South America's Chancay Port signed a friendly port agreement at the Chinese Embassy in Peru. In the first quarter, Suzhou Port has exported about 500 million yuan worth of goods such as automobiles and construction machinery to Peru, a year-on-year increase of more than 30%. Since the official opening of the port in December 2024, Haitong Taicang Automobile Terminal has exported 212,000 domestically produced vehicles.
